Our speaker will be Lane Sparkman, Acting Executive Director of Mosaico CDC, is restarting Mosaico's popular Sense of Pride Program (which Bristol Rotary supported for many years) to align with the new Social Studies standards approved by RI Department of Education (RIDE) in 2023. Working closely with Diane Sanna, Deputy Superintendent of the Bristol Warren Regional School District, and teachers in the district, Lane is developing new classroom activities, updating the town history texts, and exploring new community service projects. Lane knows Sense of Pride well; she ran the program for Mosaico from 2010 to 2016. In 2016, Lane left Mosaico to become Associate Director of Education and Public Programs for Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea. In that position, she led multiple public history projects, worked closely with teachers across the state, and supported RIDE in the development of the new Social Studies standards.  Lane rejoined Mosaico in April 2024.

Bristol Rotary Lunch Meeting
Jan. 22, 2025 12:15 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Speaker is Nicole Ferreira - Multitude Ministeries:  Since 2020 there has been a 65% increase in homelessness, and we feel it is our responsibility to help end this epidemic. Our ultimate goal is not just to alleviate the symptoms of homelessness but to address its root causes, working towards a society where everyone has access to stable housing, supportive resources, and spiritual guidance. Until the housing dilemmas improve we aim to fill the gap. By empowering individuals with the tools and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives, we strive to cure homelessness and restore the inherent dignity and worth of every person.

Our Speaker on March 19 will be Chuck Anastasia, Leader of the St. Mary of the Bay's M25:35 Ministry to Refugees and Immigrants.  M25:35 refers to the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, Verse 35. Their mission is to “welcome the stranger among us.” This Ministry was founded in the spring of 2022 shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when a parishioner made a generous one-time donation to provide housing assistance for Ukrainian refugees in Rhode Island. The Ministry has an eight-member board of advisors and more than 50 volunteers and supporters to help global refugees who are resettling in Rhode Island. To-date, they have assisted over 20 families from 10 countries.  The M25:35 Ministry is a tax-exempt organization. Bristol Rotary donated to this Ministry in 2023

Liza Perry, BA, CCHW (Bachelor of industrial and organizational psychology, Certified Community Health Worker). I am a LIHEAP/Family Center advocate for East Bay Community Action Program. LIHEAP stands for low-income heating assistance program. As a LIHEAP Advocate, I screen applicants to see if they qualify for our program - to get a grant for their heating source. If they qualify, I also enroll them in a year-round monthly discount on their electric bill. For Low-income and homeless qualified individuals, we also check and see what other resources can be provided to the client, such as: SNAP benefits, subsidized or section 8 housing, the “clothing closet,” an entire room that is filled with mostly brand-new clothing, to help them get back into the workforce, and more.
