Bristol Rotary's Virtual Food Drive

The Problem: COVID-19

  • Loss of jobs, sickness, health costs, quarantines,  no new help from Congress - are all putting pressure on affording food for millions of families.
  • As a result, food lines are forming all over the country not unlike the Depression in the '30s.
  • Food banks are the primary source of help to families not only in providing food but a healthy food mix.

A Solution:

  • Food banks prefer to buy the food from their food sources rather than accept donated food. They have access to more variety and can put together healthier packages at less cost.
  • The money they receive as donations can multiply the food they can offer – they can pay 5 cents on the $1. Opposite, see what they can provide for $1.
  • They can feed a family of 4 to 6 for a week for $60.
  • During the pandemic, people want to know what they can do to help. This is as basic as it gets - help feed your neighbors.

Bristol Rotary:
  • The Rotary Club of Bristol, RI, in its traditional role of supporting the community, has established a Virtual Food Drive (VFD) - asking the businesses and people of Rhode Island to contribute to local food banks.
  • The VFD was started in June and received over $4,000 from the first mailing - from donors all over the East Bay. $4,000 can feed 67 families of 4 to 6 members for a week.
  • Since the need was immediate, a check was given to the East Bay Food Pantry, the closest food bank, to be converted to food packages without delay (see below, right). The East Bay Food Pantry feeds 1,000 Families a month.
  • The need has intensified, so our 3rd phase VFD starts right away, with a target of $30,000 which can feed 500 families of 4 to 6 for a week. We want to reach out all over Rhode Island where ever the need is great.
