As the Board of Directors of the Bristol Rotary Club planned out the 2009-2010 Rotary Year, the subject of a project for Rotary World Literacy Month in March, 2010, posed a question: "Why wait until March?"... the answer, of course, is: "because we have to raise the funds first!" [last year's project: BANANAGRAM literacy kits, was funded by the Spring Clam Boil]

President-Elect Howard Kestenberg offered a challenge: he would personally underwrite President Forrest Edward's "Children's Dictionary" Project, and the Club's Rotarians could "buy in" to the project one case of books at a time. It worked, and the Dictionaries were soon fully subscribed by Bristol Rotarians and ready for delivery to each 3rd-grader in the Bristol/Warren School District... before the Holidays, and in time for the "using the dictionary" module of the curriculum.

What to do with the unused "Challenge Grant"?... "Roll it forward for another literacy project in the Spring" says Howard. That's "Service Above Self"
